MahamaCares

Ghana Medical Trust Fund support for specialist treatment of certain serious conditions, available at Sunyani Teaching Hospital.

MahamaCares, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF), helps pay for specialist treatment of certain serious conditions. Sunyani Teaching Hospital is one of the facilities that take part in the programme.

What is covered now

The programme currently covers eight cancers: five childhood cancers (under 18) and three adult cancers (breast, cervical and prostate). Support can include specialist consultations, diagnostic investigations, approved medicines and consumables, hospital admission and ward care, surgical procedures and specialised treatment. The Trust pays only for services in the approved package authorised for each patient. Cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, stroke and diabetes are planned for later phases.

Who can get support

To qualify, you need both of the following:

  • Active NHIS membership
  • A referral from a specialist, made after a medical assessment under the approved guidelines

How to apply

Applications can only be made by a specialist on your behalf:

  1. Visit the hospital.
  2. Our specialist assesses you and refers you to the GMTF.
  3. A navigation officer forwards the application.
  4. The GMTF decides, usually within 14 days of a complete application.
  5. If approved, you return for treatment.

Please note

  • Bills paid without prior GMTF authorisation are not reimbursed.
  • We do not charge an approved patient the difference between our normal price and the GMTF rate.
  • Transport, accommodation and meals are not covered.
  • The GMTF does not cover treatment outside Ghana.

Appeals and complaints

You can appeal through the specialist who made the application, or raise a complaint with a navigation officer or the GMTF directly.
