Our History
In 1927, the British established a hospital for the people of Western Ashanti. Following the creation of the Brong Ahafo Region on 14th April 1959, the hospital underwent long transformation and expansion until it moved to its present location. In 2003, an ultra-modern hospital complex, built by the International Hospital Group (IHG) of the United Kingdom, was completed and handed over to the Government of Ghana, and services moved from the 79-year-old facility into the new state-of-the-art hospital.
The Sunyani Regional Hospital, established by the Ministry of Health as part of the same era of ultra-modern hospital construction, was converted to a teaching hospital in 2023 to provide tertiary healthcare, expanded undergraduate and postgraduate training of health professionals, and research into emerging diseases.
Where We Are
Sunyani Teaching Hospital is located in the Sunyani Municipality, the capital of Ghana’s Bono Region. The hospital serves its immediate catchment area and receives referrals from the Bono East, Ahafo, Savannah, and Western North regions, as well as from neighboring Côte d’Ivoire.
Our Mandate
Per the Ghana Health Service and Teaching Hospitals Act, 1996 (Act 525):
- To provide tertiary healthcare (Specialist Clinical Care)
- To train graduate and postgraduate medical students and other health professionals
- To conduct research into emerging diseases
