STH leadership training and capacity building workshop New

Sunyani Teaching Hospital (STH) has held a two-day leadership training and capacity-building workshop for its Directors, Heads of Sub-Budget Management Centres (Sub-BMCs), core managers, and the heads of HASS departments and units.

The workshop took place on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th October 2026 under the theme “Leadership for Results: Driving Performance, Accountability, Teamwork and Continuous Improvement in Healthcare Delivery.”

It aimed to strengthen the leadership, management and governance capacity of the hospital’s managers. The focus was on helping them lead their people effectively, manage resources well, and drive the hospital towards its strategic objectives and quality service delivery.

A commitment to empowering staff

The Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Cardinal Newton, opened the workshop. He stressed how important the training is for the hospital’s growth as a teaching hospital, and how much depends on those who lead its departments and units. He reaffirmed management’s commitment to empowering staff at every level to achieve the hospital’s objectives. He described investing in the people who lead teams as central to delivering consistent, high-quality care to patients.

Practical sessions on leading and managing

The Ag. Director of Administration, Dr. Samuel Dodzi, led the facilitation. Over the two days, he took participants through three sessions.

  • Departmental Leadership. Participants looked at what leadership really means and at the main leadership styles, with the strengths and limitations of each. The discussion went on to what it takes to be a leader people choose to follow, rather than one they follow only because of position.
  • Courageous Conversations. This session dealt with difficult situations every manager faces. Participants worked through how to have uncomfortable conversations constructively, from addressing performance concerns to resolving disagreements within teams, in ways that protect relationships and lead to solutions.
  • Management in Perspective. Participants examined what management is, the core roles of a manager, and the habits that make a manager effective in planning, organising, and getting the best out of people and resources.

Each session was practical and interactive. Participants drew on real experiences from their own departments and units and discussed how to apply the lessons to their day-to-day work.

Building a culture of results

The workshop forms part of the hospital’s wider effort to build strong, accountable leadership across all its directorates, Sub-BMCs and support units. Participants are expected to take the lessons back to their teams and apply them in their own departments. The aim is a culture of performance, teamwork and continuous improvement that is felt in the quality of care patients receive at Sunyani Teaching Hospital.
